South Higgins Lake State Park

South Higgins Lake State Park, situated on 1 mile of shoreline along Higgins Lake, boasts one of the largest Michigan state park campgrounds, a popular boat launch and a popular day-use area. Marl Lake, a considerably smaller, shallower and less developed lake, is located on the southern side of the park across County Road 100 and is surrounded by 5.5 miles of wooded trails.

The 1,364-acre park is best known for its array of water recreation offerings. Higgins Lake, a large, spring-fed body of water known for its clarity, fishing potential and recreational boating, has a large boating access site with a boat basin, nine launches and a boat-washing station. In contrast, Marl Lake offers a quieter, more natural setting for non motorized boats and electric motorboats. Boat rentals are available in the park.

North Higgins Lake State Park

North Higgins Lake State Park, located on the north shore of Higgins Lake, is home to 449 acres of lakeside recreation in a natural wooded atmosphere. The park is situated on the site of what was once one of the world’s largest seedling nurseries and features a museum dedicated to telling the story of that nursery, Michigan forestry and the Civilian Conservation Corp’s efforts in Michigan.

The park is home to two campgrounds, overnight lodging facilities, a boat launch, a popular swimming beach, a picnic area and more than 8 miles of trails, located adjacent to the CCC Museum. The campground is open all year.

The Higgins Lake Nursery and CCC Museum tells the story of the Civilian Conservation Corps and its role in providing work to young men during the Great Depression. Historical interpretation is provided by the Michigan History Center.
